Elder Issues

Issues of intergenerational harmony, caregiver problems, housing decisions and financial and estate matters are examples of problems that can affect our older citizens. MCMC has developed a specialized program, including advanced training for mediators, that assists seniors involved in conflict.

The “Wise Talk” program is tailored to address the special needs of an elderly population and those who care for seniors, whether as family members, advocates, caregivers or other service providers.   Pennsylvania has the third largest population of senior citizens in the country, many of whom are living longer, healthier lives. But some of life’s most difficult choices can also arise in our later years, and mediation is available to help resolve the conflict that can result, whether in the home, hospital, senior center or a care facility.

If you are interested in becoming a mediator specializing in elder conflict issues, please see our Elder Mediation Roster requirements

INTERGENERATIONAL CONFLICT

Seniors often view the world through different lens of experience from their children or grandchildren which is not necessarily an issue of right or wrong. Mediation can help the conversation take a positive turn towards resolution of the different viewpoints.

CAREGIVER ISSUES

Are caregivers being responsive to the needs of the elderly in their care? Are the seniors overly demanding? A neutral mediator can help sooth the atmosphere of conflict in these particularly sensitive settings.

HOUSING DECISIONS

Should grandpa stay in his house? Who will help him with chores? Is he willing to move to an assisted living facility? Are his children OK with that? A mediator can help bring clarity and understanding to life’s difficult choices.

FINANCIAL AND ESTATE MATTERS

What are the best alternatives for care for the elderly? How will they pay the costs?  Who will be the responsible party? Trust and estate lawyers and financial advisers can benefit from the intervention of a mediator when conflict arises in families over sensitive issues such as financial management.
