Elder Mediation Training

September 12 - 14, 2012
9:00am – 5:00pm

As people age, individuals and families are faced with many difficult decisions and often, conflict.  Mediation can play a critical role in bringing older adults together with their family members, care givers, healthcare and social service providers to explore ways to resolve disputes. This training will prepare participants to practice Transformative Mediation in a way that responds to the needs of those present and respects each person's decision-making capacity as they face critical times of transition. Basic Transformative Mediation training is a prerequisite. The interactive format will include lecture, discussion and role plays. Through a grant from the PA Department of Aging, MCMC has developed Wise Talk, a model elder mediation program.

Topics will include:

  • Why elder mediation as a specialty
  • Conflicts associated with aging
  • Understanding the experience of conflict
  • Role of the mediator
  • Mediator intervention strategies
  • Role of empowerment and recognition
  • Special practice issues including capacity and accommodations
  • Screening for capacity and abuse
  • Ethical considerations

Who should attend:

  • Mediation practitioners with prior mediation experience who want to expand their practice to include the emerging specialty of Elder Mediation
  • Attorneys
  • Social Workers
  • Geriatric case managers
  • Professionals working in the field of geriatrics
